First of all, the most standard question in the book: how did you get into photography?

I was always involved in art so photography was just a natural thing to try. I was definitely drawn into it but decided to focus on drawing and painting in university. After hating it, I enrolled in another school and did my BFA in photography.

Tell us a little about where you live. How does your town/city/country affect your photography?

I live in Toronto, Canada. It's a good city in the sense that it's very multi-cultural and liberal and cosmopolitan and all that, but it lacks something. I don't know exactly what it is, maybe momentum, or maybe I've squeezed out all the inspiration that I can from it. So it's time to move.

The countryside outside of Toronto definitely feels much more inspirational.

What did you have for breakfast this morning?

An egg salad sandwich from Tim Hortons.

Did you study, or are you studying, photography? If not, how did you learn?

I went to Ryerson University for photography.

What are five things you can’t live without?

A few important people, traveling in some way or another, swimming in the outdoors, good food, and the countryside.

Do you believe that with the rise of digital photography the phrase “everyone can be a photographer” is true?

Sure, why not?

Describe your average day.

Wake up early, try to be productive, three square meals and if it's a good day: read, spend some more time in bed, drive somewhere, photograph, wine or whiskey, time in the sun, have a good conversation.

What was the last movie you saw in the theatre?

Melancholia

If every photograph should contain one key element, what would it be in your opinion?

Honesty and truth

If you could go anywhere in the world to take photographs where would you go?

Anywhere around water

What is your fondest childhood memory?

Driving around America with my mom when I was 8.

Who, or what, is your biggest influence?

I don't know if I have one specific influence. It's more like I will go back to some images or songs or places a lot. But really the influences change often. Right now I've been looking at a lot of Juergen Teller and Matisse, and really loved The Farmer's Daughter by Harrison.

What are your other hobbies besides photography?

I love cooking and traveling. I'm also almost fluent in French and am working at getting there.

Do you think that the Internet is a legitimate place to showcase your work?

Ya definitely. I mean it's so great because your audience is much more broad and the internet as a platform is probably more creative. Actually, I think that the internet is probably the most legitimate place to showcase work. The only things are the lack of tangibility, size, and maybe a physical proximity of community. But it's not like you can touch a print in a gallery anyway, and there are a lot of easily accessible zines if the physical print is your sort of thing. So the internet just doesn't give you size and seeing real people.

Do you always have preconceived concepts of what you want to shoot?

Sometimes I do. I don't know if those are my best images though. To preconceive something is definitely a different mode of shooting for me. I think what I like to pre-visualize is the setting and mood and colours of a photograph.

What are your plans for the winter?

I have two series that I'm working on, amongst some fashion and portrait editorials. And I'm planning on moving by the Spring time--so saving for that.

What advice would you give to your fellow up-and-coming photographers?

Might sound cliché, but go with your instinct and just do it a lot. And make sure it is rewarding in some way or another.

Our last interviewee, Marina Richter, wants to know: Do you feel supported by your non-artist friends and family?

I have a few dearest friends, and none of them are involved in the arts. They are supportive of me, but I think the idea of art is unfortunately intimidating to a lot of people, and so they aren't too actively involved with my art.

INTERVIEW #49: MARINA RICHTER

First of all, the most standard question in the book: how did you get into photography?

Perhaps I am "the German" from Susan Sontag's theory of taking pictures by traveling: "The method especially appeals to people handicapped by a ruthless work ethic – Germans, Japanese and Americans. Using a camera appeases the anxiety which the work driven feel about not working when they are on vacation and supposed to be having fun. They have something to do that is like a friendly imitation of work: they can take pictures." P.S.: my travels are microcosmic.

Tell us a little about where you live. How does your town/city/country affect your photography?

I want to leave this town. It is the town of my studies and of a big love. Both are over for years. It was a town of hope and fall. By now it is exhausted and I am glad about planning the move. It is an arrangement in waiting. My photos are very composed cuttings and something after reality. I am interested in how near an extract can be it´s reality. It´s not about the real pain or despair or luck, it is more about a gap. For me my photos are abstractedly and imperfect ever. I would be interested in what the viewer receives from this shapes. My photos are a reaction to this town. By now It´s like the view of a stranger. I can´t look away yet and I am not able to look there deeper anymore.

What did you have for breakfast this morning?

First a well tasting coffee with milk and sugar and then an activating black coffee. 6 min egg with paprika powder, salami, buttered bread.

Did you study, or are you studying, photography? If not, how did you learn?

My education touched it. I actually studied graphic design. I know a darkroom and the smell of fixer and stop bath. I was always afraid in the darkroom. I searched for somebody who could come along with me. Now I am learning by doing it myself and without any pressure or curriculum or foreign principles.

What are five things you can’t live without?

Ignoring bills, writing, americansuburbx.com, quotations, warmth.

Do you believe that with the rise of digital photography the phrase “everyone can be a photographer” is true?

I ask back: In the past, could not everyone be a photographer? I don´t think that the rising of digital photography is the date of the access of the mass into photography. Analog photo does not mean real complication, or? The jump into the practicable photography for everyone was much earlier than at the point, where digital P. became standard. There are people, who are interested in technology with the focus on future and progress and improvement. And these people work with the complexity of things and invest a lot of time in it. And there are people who are looking into the past and are interested in past inventions. I try not to lose in technical things. Photography is so much and a photographer can define himself on so many things. My rather questions are: what is a photographer. What has a photographer to achieve and how long and how intensive. Who is a photographer and who is a picture maker and who is an artist and what means what? Even before digital photography was affordable for everyone.

Describe your average day.

Wonderful.

What was the last movie you saw in the theatre?

The last film I have already forgotten. But the last impressing film I've seen was a documentary film about the women who have translated the books of Fyodor Dostoyevsky into German. Her name was Swetlana Geier. (Title: ,The Woman with the 5 Elephants’)

If every photograph should contain one key element, what would it be in your opinion?

I don´t know ... maybe geometry.

If you could go anywhere in the world to take photographs where would you go?

Marseille.

What is your fondest childhood memory?

To get little tetra packs and "duplo" (a chocolate bar) from grandma, because older people were allowed to visit west Berlin... and we loved the stickers.

Who, or what, is your biggest influence?

My hurdles, blockades and fears.

What are your other hobbies besides photography?

Thinking, searching, writing, talking and discussing, sleeping, literature of Betty Friedan, Hannah Arendt, Brigitte Reimann, Siri Hustvedt, Simone de Beauvoir.

Do you think that the Internet is a legitimate place to showcase your work?

Yes. The internet is an important channel to transport my work. Actually, in design I show only finished work. In photography it is different. Processing and publishing follow each other instantly. On the one hand the internet can speed up my decisions and on the other hand it can interrupt my work. Decisions are made faster with the awareness of an audience. I am not really afraid of the internet. You can make mistakes there like in real life and you can handle these like in real life. For me it´s a careful approach to a viewer. But it also can be very irritating what people like and prefer in one's work. The internet can be very seductive and involving. Sometimes I feel a pressing demand. Flickr is a place where you get response and a consistent support which really can help. It can be a gently way to get attention. I admire the people who taking care of each other and following others work. And I also admire the people who transport others work and use their channels to announce and finding new or old work in a time-consuming area like the net. At the beginning of my Flickr activities I was fascinated by the self-confident young women, who seem to shoot without rules but even in aware of something. Sometimes the internet is an open door and other times the internet is a thick and overloaded place, where only the same artists began to grow.

Do you always have preconceived concepts of what you want to shoot?

No. I don´t work with a concept and that is quiet untypical for me. To develop an own method and way of working is my need. The photography is out off concept intentionally. So it´s very incomplete yet. I am really excited about getting attention. Most work on my photos until now is selecting or combine. I am working like a sculptor, who carves a figure out of an undefined stone.

What are your plans for the winter?

Keep warm all the time. Keep my creativity free from money and limiting influences. A self defence course because of my early in the morning job. Enough candles. Visit my best friend after a too long break. Read english books to improve my awful English.

What advice would you give to your fellow up-and-coming photographers?

"You've achieved success in your field when you don't know whether what you're doing is work or play". Warren Beatty

That`s an interesting question. There is no song. My pictures are silent.

INTERVIEW #48: VICKI KING

First of all, the most standard question in the book: how did you get into photography?

I’d like to say I was one of those people who have been photographing forever, but I moved to London about 4 years ago to do a foundation course at London College of Fashion, I thought I wanted to do design. I guess I had a lot of pent up creative energy and I just couldn’t release all of that through designing, so I was pretty miserable. Towards the end of the course we started to incorporate photography and it was like a light bulb switched on in my head.

Tell us a little about where you live. How does your town/city/country affect your photography?

I live in South London which is visually quite an ugly place, but there is a lot going on here and there is a large arts scene. If you get sick of looking at grey concrete you can just get on the train for 30 mins and be somewhere that looks like a countryside village.

Living in London is obviously a great place for a creative person, for resources and opportunities. In the project I am going to be working on over the next year I am utilising my surroundings and aspects of British culture to a much larger extent than I have done previously.

What did you have for breakfast this morning?

Porridge and honey. Proper English old lady food.

Did you study, or are you studying, photography? If not, how did you learn?

As I mentioned above I did a foundation course then I went onto do a BA in Photography at London College of Communication, and I am currently in my final year. I taught myself a lot of the basic technical stuff though before I started, mostly through trial and error and writing loads of stupid messages on internet forums haha.

What are five things you can’t live without?

I’m sure I couldn’t be stating something more predictable here, but my little Nikon FM camera, couple of rolls of Kodak Portra film, my mac, and a big cup of coffee..

Do you believe that with the rise of digital photography the phrase “everyone can be a photographer” is true?

I think accessing images and becoming inspired and confident about showing your photographs to others has been made so much easier by digital photography and the internet. So yes anyone can be a photographer. Professionally I guess is another matter.

Describe your average day.

Get up, drink a lot of coffee, emails and internet things, lectures at uni, planning photography related things, pub with my housemates. Wow I sound pretty boring!

What was the last movie you saw in the theatre?

I think it was Harry Potter..? I’m embarrassed to say how excited I was.

If every photograph should contain one key element, what would it be in your opinion?

I’m all about the visuals, so the ability to stimulate some sort of eye orgasm is always a winner.

What is your fondest childhood memory?

My sister and I used to play a game where we would have to run up the whole of our road through peoples back gardens. Everyone had massive ones and they seemed like these magical forbidden places when we were small.

Who, or what, is your biggest influence?

The Sun. Reflections. Things you can’t quite grab hold of.

What are your other hobbies besides photography?

I go to a lot of gigs. I’m into films. Dressing up. Exploring the world..

Do you think that the Internet is a legitimate place to showcase your work?

Absolutely, I have heard some artists, especially in an arts education slating it, and to be honest I think that is pretentious and naïve. Of course unless it completely goes against your practice and ethics. But how else can emerging artists showcase their work for free to people all over the world? It is imperative.

Where does your inspiration usually come from?

A lot of the time music.. I’ll kind of imagine images to go with sounds. Light is always a big influence. Strange beauty. The mood of places, ambiance. And I’m really into Renaissance painting.

Do you always have preconceived concepts of what you want to shoot?

I naturally work very intuitively; being at university has made me a lot more conscious about what I am photographing and why. That said, many of my ideas come from instinctual sources. I always want my work to be exciting to look at. I could never rely on concept alone.

What are some of your favorite films?

I like Martin De Thurah & Andrei Tarkovsky’s film’s for the visuals. Anything involving or directed by Harmony Korine. It's pretty depressing by Mysterious Skin. Natural Born Killers. Oh and anything with zombies.

What are your plans for the fall?

Well I am back at university now, so I will be working there most days. Me and some fellow photographers are also working collaboratively to produce a publication, so that should come into effect over the next few months.

First of all, the most standard question in the book: how did you get into photography?

I got involved with photography when I moved to Venice from Hollywood. I purchased a camera to document my summer. I was discovering a new city while simultaneously discovering photography and managed to joyously combine the two.

Tell us a little about where you live. How does your town/city/country affect your photography?

I live in Venice Beach, right on the boardwalk. I'm amidst all the batshit craziness and steps away from the water. It helps me stay sane. I love my environment and the community I'm involved in. This town is full of artists so it's quite easy to find inspiration everywhere you look.

Do you have a favorite photographer?

I honestly can't say I have a single favorite photographer. I try not to get too tangled up in other peoples work. I do enjoy browsing random blogs and photography magazines.

Did you study, or are you studying, photography? If not, how did you learn?

I'm self-taught and never had any formal training. I sat in a photography class in college once and walked out the first day, 20 minutes into the lecture. I learned by pointing and shooting. I never go into technical details, I prefer capturing moments in an instinctual manner.

What are five things you can’t live without?

I don't know about five but the one thing I cannot live without is the Sun.

Describe your average day.

Wake up, skate down the boardwalk, go by the beach, meditate, read, sleep.

If you could go anywhere in the world to take photographs where would you go?

Everywhere. Especially exotic locations. I can't wait to travel the world and document it. I have a calling to start off in South America.

If every photograph should contain one key element, what would it be in your opinion?

Honesty.

What is your fondest childhood memory?

Hanging out with friends in our neighborhood on "the wall".

What do you think the world will be like 50 years from now?

A shitshow.

Do you think that the Internet is a legitimate place to showcase your work?

Yes. It's simple, effective and can reach a broad audience.

What are your other hobbies besides photography?

The same shit as everyone else. I've been digging deeper into my personal spiritual growth so hobbies tend to become a little irrelevant after a while.

Where does your inspiration usually come from?

The beauty of nature and creation.

What is your favorite book and why?

Women by Bukowski. Reading his books during lectures made college go by a lot quicker.

Can you provide some background information on the events occurring in your two series entitled "Welcome Home" and "Metropolis"?

They're random moments I captured during trips to the Rainbow Gathering and Burning Man.

What are your plans for the fall?

No concrete plans. I'll be waiting for it to end so it can be 2012 already.

First of all, the most standard question in the book: how did you get into photography?

I wish I had more of an exciting story but honestly, the internet (especially blogging). I wanted images to accompany my words so I started to try and make better and better pictures.

Tell us a little about where you live. How does your town/city/country affect your photography?

I live part time in both Calgary and my hometown of Taber (a few hours drive south of Calgary). I love the different landscapes surrounding me - to the west; mountains, the south prairies, and to the east the badlands. I love to surround a subject in its emptiness.

Do you have a favorite photographer?

I think today my favourite may be Glen Erler (www.glenerler.com).

Did you study, or are you studying, photography? If not, how did you learn?

I studied photography at the Alberta College of Art + Design. I graduated in 2010.

What is your most treasured possession?

I don't know exactly, I guess bits of memories.

What are five things you can’t live without?

1. glasses, I suppose

2. ipod

3. computer (although I wish it weren't true)

4. pillow

5. camera

Describe your average day.

Each day differs, I suppose. I wish I had more of a routine. A day off; I try and wake up at 9, but usually it ends up being 10/1030. I'll eat the same thing for breakfast - pears and blackberries, soy yogurt and granola. I'll leave my apartment to find coffee. In the afternoon I'll try and do something artistically productive, whether it be editing photographs or going to find something or somebody to photograph. I'll watch an episode of whatever TV show I'm currently devouring (right now, season 1 of the Killing) make something egg based for supper - and look at the beautiful things people are making on the computer.

What are your other hobbies besides photography?

I can be a bit of a movie nerd. As well as reading and sleeping.

Favorite part of the summer so far?

Each time I drink some beer with a friend it becomes my new favourite part of the summer.

If you could go anywhere in the world to take photographs where would you go?

The Southern States.

If every photograph should contain one key element, what would it be in your opinion?

If I were to think any more about this I'd probably disagree with myself but love for the subject.

What is your fondest childhood memory?

Playing elaborate games that involved tons of imagination with my 14 cousins on my uncle's farm. Jurassic Park was a favourite, the parked farm equipment would play the part of the dinosaurs.

Do you think that the Internet is a legitimate place to showcase your work?

Definitely.

Our last interviewee, Carlos Garcia Martinez, wants to know: I’m always very interested in the artistic process that goes through the mind of other artists. I’d like to know how people get their ideas about new projects and pictures, how they decide if a project is worth doing or not, how they decide what pictures to use, etc.

I'm not sure if I can explain this exactly. I love spending time alone, driving or walking. Ideas usually just kind of appear during hours of thinking. As for which photographs to use, I think you just know when you look through them - the one that just kind of strikes you.

INTERVIEW #45: CARLOS GARCIA MARTINEZ

Carlos Garcia Martinez, 18 year old photographer from Spain

First of all, the most standard question in the book: how did you get into photography?

Well I’ve always been a person who’s been interested in photography and general visual arts. One day I just decided to take it to the next level and started reading some photography books, basic technical and composition theory. I really liked what I was learning so in the next days I bought a DSLR and started from there.

In a few months time I won a local photography contest, but maybe because I am a very competitive person I never felt like I was done with it so I’ve always tried to keep getting better and better since then. I now work with 35mm film mostly and take much more less pictures than back then but I still have this “never enough” spirit in me.

Tell us a little about where you live.

Well, during the course I live in Madrid where I study Audiovisual Communication, and in summer I live in Alicante, my hometown, which is a quiet city in the east of Spain though very touristic. I think that for my photography it’s very nice to have such a huge contrast between these both cities, Madrid being an extremely busy city while Alicante being much quieter. I like going out to the city with some B&W film, while in Alicante I enjoy riding my bike around empty neighborhoods with some color film trying to capture it’s mood.

Do you have a favorite photographer?

I really couldn’t say one. I really enjoy old street/documental photographers like Bruce Davidson, Robert Frank and William Klein, but then I also love color photographers like Martin Parr and Joel Sternfeld.

There are also some spectacular photographers that I’ve found on places like flickr, too
many to name them here actually, but one should always be looking for new sources of ideas
everywhere.

Did you study, or are you studying, photography? If not, how did you learn?

I am totally self-taught in photography, using the web as my main resource to get books, videos and documentals. Anything you could need is really out there and it is also a limitless source of inspiration for me. I have done my first year of Audiovisual Comunication but it is now in the second one where I have photography, though it’s just really basic stuff like using the manual controls and developing B&W film.

Some online communities are also really useful, but you have really know what comments you
should pay attention to and which ones you should ignore.

What is your most treasured possession?

I guess my camera. It’s not very expensive and I don’t really take much care of it, but it’s what I try to take everywhere and the thing I really couldn’t live without.

What are five things you can’t live without?

I’m not a guy who likes actually NEEDING lots of stuff to live; I sometimes enjoy having short trips and leaving everything behind. But it’d be my camera I guess and some film, guitar, computer, hard-drive and headphones.

Describe your average day.

Get up at 8 and go to uni, come back at 13:00 and chill for a bit before lunch. In the afternoon I take a nap, go to the gym or just chill with some mates of my dorm. After dinner we usually watch a couple of films and fool around, or go out if we’re in the mood for it. Now in summer time we go to play football some afternoons and then enjoy the beach or some swimming pool.

What are your other hobbies besides photography?

I love cinema and always try to watch a movie every day. I also can’t live without music, it’s on practically all the time, and I play the guitar a bit myself. Also I love art in general, so Madrid is an ideal place for me to be with such beautiful museums like El Prado, Thyssen and Reina Sofia.

Favorite part of the summer so far?

My favorite part of the summer is actually just about to start. I’m leaving to Hungary on the 9th, then going to Madrid on the 16th, and then leaving again on the 21st for a trip around The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.

If you could go anywhere in the world to take photographs where would you go?

I love travelling and really I’m happy anywhere I go. If I could choose though, It’d be between Paris and the US, because most of my favorite photographers have worked in those places, both are very inspirational.

What are some of your favorite films?

I love cinema and especially classic films. Orson Welles, Kubrick, Fellini and Billy Wilder are some of my favorite directors. As to favorite films, I love Fellini’s La Strada and Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life, but then again I love many other movies.

If every photograph should contain one key element, what would it be in your opinion?

I always think of “people” as the key element to my pictures. I think they always boost the interest of any picture; we can’t help to wonder what’s the story behind the person, what he’s doing there, etc. I like having leaving those questions unanswered so the viewer stops at the picture and tries to answer them himself. So yeah, for me it’d be people.

What is your fondest childhood memory?

I remember very happily my child times playing in some local football tournament with my school friends. There was this team from the other class in the tournament that always used to beat us at school, but when we played them in the tournament we actually won after a though match. I remember them all crying and us having one of the best time of our lives. We won that tournament at the end but most of all we always had a great time together.

Where does your inspiration usually come from?

I think artists should never let their artistic part relax. Usually, for a photographer, inspiration comes from other photographers, but quite a lot of the time it also comes from movies, paintings, books, TV and real life experiences… Anything could make an idea pop on your mind. If you’re not always paying attention these sources of inspiration might get ignored.

What would you like to ask the next interviewee?

I’m always very interested in the artistic process that goes through the mind of other artists. I’d like to know how people get their ideas about new projects and pictures, how they decide if a project is worth doing or not, how they decide what pictures to use, etc.

INTERVIEW #44: SPENCER WOHLRAB

First of all, the most standard question in the book: how did you get into photography?

I remember flipping through the yellow pages to find ads for tanning beds, because they always had pictures of babes in bikinis, thinking "This photographer is the luckiest guy in the world." So I saved up my allowance for a couple of months and bought a Polaroid camera, which I only used to take photos of cars. You should see those photos. Their pretty rad.

Tell us a little about where you live.

I live in New York City, which is alot like an abusive girlfriend. She will beat you, put you down, and leave you for dead, but in the morning, you still love her and what you have been through.

Do you have a favorite photographer?

I am inspired by fashion, and influenced by those around me. I have had the pleasure of living with some of the most amazing up and coming photographers, and working with some of the biggest names in fashion. Its these people that I look up to.

Do you have a favorite subject you like to shoot?

Girls. I mean who doesn't.

Did you study, or are you studying, photography? If not, how did you learn?

I went to Ringling College of Art to pursue a career in graphic design. It was because of this unique experience, which lead me to ditch the computer, and start shooting instead.

What is your most treasured possession?

If my house were burning down, and I only had time to grab 2 things, I think it would be negatives, and letters. And probably my harddrive, because I don't want to have to rescan all of those photos.

What are five things you can’t live without?

Years ago, this question meant something entirely different to me. Since loosing myself in the city that never sleeps, I have had to give up every single thing I have had at one point or another, so other than the essentials and some good friends, I don't think there is much I couldn't do without.

If you could be anyone for a day who would you be?

Someone rich. And I would want to spend that day in Vegas.

Describe your average day.

Well I start drinking around 1pm. I always carry a backpack with 2 cameas, a bag full of film, a tshirt, and an extra pair of socks and underwear just in case I feel like running away on that particular day.

Where does your inspiration usually come from?

My inspiration usually comes from the relationships around me, and the experiences I have had. I am a true romantic at heart, and this affects alot of what I do.

What is your favorite book and why?

They say the Bible contains all information. I'm not sure if I believe this.

What are your other hobbies besides photography?

I used to skateboard, but I quit for a girl.

What are your plans for the summer?

No plans. I think I would like to jump off a waterfall. Well see.
